Back when I started this
project, I never knew it would take this long, or become such a strong
tale. But, like most things in roleplaying, they're never what you expect.
When I first got the concept for Nemisis, I had
not yet discovered RPGs and the idea was much different than it is now.
The game was originally planned to be a video game (3D action, Doom-esque),
but, as I couldn't program (and for that matter, still can't), the idea
was one in a hundred, and was placed in that pit in the back of my mind
where so many game ideas go.
Later, I would come back
to the concept, each time altering it. The game went from video game, to
board game, to a collectable card game (aliens take over modern Earth),
among others.
Finally, one night (shortly
after my grand discovery of RPGs) the idea hit me like a sack of rusted
metal shards.
"Why not a roleplaying game?" The idea seemed to whisper to me. Maybe it
was the late hour, maybe
it was boredom, maybe I had had too much caffeine, or, maybe, my house
was built on an ancient Indian Burial Ground, but I could almost feel a
tingle.
I set to work immediately
on my new (used) Acer 486SX 33mhz PC (don't laugh) and began typing the
document. You'll notice the names of the files are rpgpt#, this is because
I believe naming a game adds a
finality to it, and is a jinx. (I had named several games near completion,
all suddenly stopped.) The names
flowed from one, to another, until finally, it hit me. "Nemisis" It spoke
perfectly of the game. It meant
an enemy. In my game, humankind became their own nemesis, being converted
to evil, and by the
evil shown in cities and the hearts of governments and individuals out
only for themselves. unfortunately, I am a chronic bad speller and
managed to spell it "Nemisis" instead of "Nemesis", the proper form. However,
I have worked this into the game. In the new language "common" (see skills)
many spellings have been simplified. In the game, nemesis is instead spelled
nemisis. Well, I'm just too lazy to change it.
The aliens also underwent
a constant name change. No particular name seemed to quite fit them
(except "the nemisis"). The
name changed from Norcha, to Akkirika, and finally, to Arrik-Ka (not
perfect, but good enough).
The original plan was to sell it myself (copied from a printer) at a measly $10 a copy, but once I got online, a new idea hit me. "Mass marketing" However, I didn't think anyone would send a check (yeah, and I'm gonna give em my address!) to a total stranger for a product they know nothing about!
So, I decided to make it free!
(note- If you really do enjoy it, please send some cash, food stamps, magically powered foodstuffs, rocks, etc. to me. I can give you my address if you send an e-mail to styphathal@yahoo.com.com)
(note2- Printed copies are still available, for only $5, see above)
If you like the game, send me comments and ideas (or even stats for your home-made junk), it could really help me out. (styphathal@geocities.com)
The game skill has become very grand, and, as such, I will be producing a series of several source books (around 10) that cover major worlds and the developments of 5 years of Hell. Once complete, each will be posted on the download page. Until then, stats completed for incomplete books can be found at: The Alcordian News Network
If you want to play, but nobody you know wants to, check out the IRC-based campaign I run for Nemisis at: http://apok.iwarp.com/nemisis/irc/irc.html
If you REALLY, REALLY like the game, make a link to it. Just copy the html below and paste it on your page.

If you want to place the rules on your page, go ahead. But remember, they're copyright Doomsday Games and Styphathal. So, be sure to mention the both of us (a link wouldn't help either).
If you're a game designer (and/or work at a game company) and are interested in Nemisis, send me an e-mail at: styphathal@yahoo.com and we'll hammer it out.
Thank you everyone for putting up with the incomplete version, this one is much better.
I would also like to thank
the FreeRPG webring for listing Nemisis, in its incomplete version;
unclebear.com for posting my
site (I love you, man!); Gameseeker (the first search engine to list it,
these guys kick!);
rpg.net (for posting their site in their Free RPG index (it has been removed
since then, and I will
try to get it back on there)); Titan (first personal site link to Nemisis);
Yahoo message boards (often placed links here); the creators of Rifts,
AD&D, and LUG's ST:TNG
rpg for the ideas and sensibility required to write an RPG; Coca-Cola and
your local Coca-Cola bottler
(for Surge, bless it's pee-green citrus-like taste); and anyone who actually
bothered to READ NEMISIS!
